Pushing that stupid rock up the hill over and over
Juliette Hana Monnier
The work plays with the idea that images connecting together create an environment that circulates between materiality, idea, and the collective imagination, finding clues on the purpose of the subject and the art practice in the meaninglessness natureof contemporary painting. There are clues about the subject and artistic practice in the absurd nature of contemporary painting. The work revolves around ideas that traverse and in- vade the mind—sometimes painfully and filled with doubt and melancholia, other times absurdly and seemingly de- void of meaning. These ideas meet us collectively, revea- ling the complexity of individual thought in painting and our collective visual environment. Sometimes, an excess of meaning blurs significance; sometimes, simple things become complex, and the obvious becomes obscure. Everything can be interpreted in multiple ways, as if one were seeking to justify its existence.
